The tavern had been busy all day with travellers taking shelter from the chilling winds that passed through the area this time of year.
An old man with a large beard sat in the corner watching the patrons come and go. As evening approached the embers on the fire began to glow and only a handful of customers remained, warming themselves by the hearth before they too headed home on this cold winters night. An icy north wind blew into the tavern as one of the few remaining patrons opened the door to stagger home.
A barmaid was collecting tankards for the wash as a gangly fellow left the bar and sat himself down in front of the old man. The older man had a hook for a hand, a wooden leg and an eye-patch, but despite his seeming ailments there was still a vibrant twinkle in his good eye. "Tell us another story old man" the gangly fellow asked, plonking two tankards of ale down on the rough table, "One for the road...".
The old man gave a toothy grin through his large beard and gripped the tankard with his good hand, straightening his back. "Have I ever told you the one about the quest for the Dragon's eye?" he ventured. His eye sparkled as if he was recalling some distant glorious memory. Two other drinkers, intrigued by the scene, gathered round.
The old man began. "The castle of Fortaan had stood for almost half a millennia before it was happened upon by five seasoned adventurers. Those rugged stone walls had seen many a kingdom rise and fall but they had now lay in ruins for almost a century before rumour spread of the great treasure hidden within its mighty stone belly. A treasure that had given great power to its bearers, but brought with it great danger. A treasure that became known as 'the Dragon's eye'...
